Bedrooms have become storage centers. Places for clothes (winter and summer) suitcases under the bed, hair products, books, magasines, medication, shoes, laundry, equipment… the list goes on.
A bedroom should be somewhere to sleep and that’s it (your own secret sanctuary). To achieve this:
1) Be ruthless in your decluttering. If you aren’t going to need it in the next 3 months it goes into storage. This includes; out of season clothes, extra products, shoes and boxes on top of the wardrobe. I would even be as tough to say if you are going to need something like a suitcase in the next 3 months, put it into storage and make sure you can access it so you’ll get it only when you need it.
2) Once you’ve de cluttered; amalgamate. Most people have a couple of wardrobes and draws in their bedroom. Move your contents around to try and remove one item of furniture from the room. It’s unrealistic to get rid of everything completely, but even removing one piece will make the room feel bigger.
3) Store away anything which sits on a surface, including deodorants, perfumers, products, books. All surfaces should be clear.
4) Put clean, preferably white, bedding on. The simpler the better. This is not a judgement of your taste… there is a reason hotels use plain while bed linen – it makes the room look bigger and brighter.
5) Now you’ve removed some furniture, see if the room can be laid out better? The bed should have plenty of room on each side of it, it should have two bedside tables (one either side) with matching lamps. If you don’t have these things, hire them / buy them or improvise with furniture and lamps from the rest of the house.
An extreme case of bedroom clutter
After, a secret sanctuary.
